Sports or Health and Fitness?

Becoming a Physical Education Teacher I was thinking of what is the most important part of a Physical Education Program. Sports or Health and Fitness? Teaching the kids the rules and fundamentals of sports is important because of the popularity and vast interest in them across the country. Also, when playing them you incorportate some health and fitness. It can really help future coaches and players in getting a better understanding of a sport. On the other hand, health and fitness is a life long skill that can be helpful to everyone. Which subject should get more attention in the classroom of Physical Education?

  1. I feel you cannot have one without the other. They go hand in hand with each other, and teaching a little of both is probably best. Health and Fitness are big right now with the rate of obesity, but teaching a sport helps a student be more confident so they can go play the sport instead of staying inside and watching TV.

  2. I agree with you there is no way to have one without the other. Teaching a student the fundamentals in a sport also helps in other areas as well. Especially if the child is young it helps them with their fine motor skills and hand eye coordination. Teaching children to be healthy helps in the long run and motivating them to be physically fit ties in with helping them to keep a healthy lifestyle throughout their lives. Age is not a concern when it comes to health and fitness, everyone has their own ways of staying healthy and being active.
